SMARTDesktop - The VDI Solution

Microsoft ending its support for some of its products has actually turned into a money-saver for many organizations.  Many organizations have used this opportunity to move out of the grip of Microsoft and into the world of open source.  New VDI (SMARTDesktop) solutions have now stepped in to support such moves.

Some time back, Microsoft ended its support for Windows XP along with Internet Explorer V8. Microsoft also ended the mainstream support to Windows 7 on January 13, 2015 and is urging its user base to adopt Windows 8.1.  As current and future versions of Windows and Office demand desktops of higher power and configuration, sustaining loyalty to Microsoft would mean buying new end-point hardware of increased configuration to support latest Microsoft Operating System & applications.

Traditional VDI solutions are locked to Microsoft Operating Systems and does not allow users to deliver free & open source applications from a Linux Server. This results in significant increase in capex, expenditure in Microsoft Operating System licenses that is over & above purchasing normal full time desktop computers. Although, traditional VDI solutions bring in commercial benefits when used with thin client based end points, still the locking with Microsoft Server & Client OS does not provide for the liberation that the customer is looking for.

This has turned into a double whammy for enterprises:
1.       Increased cost of end-point computing
2.       Additional investment in Microsoft licensing

Thankfully, new VDI solutions such as SMARTDesktop have come to the rescue. SMARTdesktop permits firms to deliver both Windows and Linux applications to any kind of end-point – even those desktops you were planning to replace because you had to migrate to Windows 8.1.  So now you can still deliver your traditional Windows apps – but only to those end-points that need to use it.  The rest can be moved to open source apps that save you a ton of money.  Not only do you get all the benefits that traditional VDI solutions bring, but you also benefit from the open source world.
